"First growth" is the English translation of the French term premier cru, which is the highest of five tiers in the ranking of Bordeaux's finest wineries. (Just below this is an unofficial list of "super seconds," not to be confused with second growths.) The five first-growth châ̂teaux (and their wines) are superior to the 14 second-growth châ̂teaux wineries, and so on.
